On Metapsychology.

"I propose that when we have succeeded in describing a psychical process in its dynamic, topographical and economic aspects, we should speak of it as a metapsychological presentation."1a*

"'Anxiety' describes a particular state of expecting the danger or preparing for it, even though it may be an unknown one. 'Fear' requires a definite object of which to be afraid. 'Fright', however, is the name we give to the state a person gets into when he has run into danger without being prepared for it; it emphasizes the factor of surprise."1b NIETZSCHE

" . . . [A]n instinct is an urge inherent in organic life to restore an earlier state of things . . . "1c*

" . . . '[T]he aim of all life is death' . . . "1d* ROUSSEAU HERZL

Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety.

"Anxiety [Angst] has an unmistakable relation to expectation: it is anxiety about something. It has a quality of indefiniteness and lack of object. In precise speech we use the word 'fear' [Furcht] rather than 'anxiety' [Angst] if it has found an object. . ."1a*
